Hi! It has been quite a while since I have written a blog post here. I have been so focused on writing on my lifestyle blog, Jens Life & Style that I have not effectively made time for this one. But that is going to change!
So I have a little problem. I hold on to things quite often. I hold onto things I just do not need. It is a horrible habit. It has made every room in my home look so disorganized. I am truly one that loves organization because being organized brings peace to my life.
I am in the middle of decluttering every room in my house. With the holidays, I needed to make room for all this new stuff. I know most of us have a space in our home that may be a catch all for everything that doesn’t have its own space. I know I do. I am here to help. Here are a few tips for decluttering any room in your home.
1. Take it one day at a time, one room at a time.
Don’t stress about the time it will take to get it organized the way you want. The best thing to do if you begin feeling over whelmed is take it one day and one room at a time. Focus on your bedroom or the bathroom first, and even if that room takes you an entire day to clear out, so be it. Just focus on the accomplishment at the end. Because it will feel better when you are finally done.
2. Only keep what is truly necessary.
I am one to hold on to things because “I might need it one day”. If you haven’t touched an item or needed it for a period of one to two years then you probably will not need that item anytime soon. Get rid of it by trashing it, donate it, or even leave it on your curb. Someone who may need it will pick it up.
I guess if it is worth some money, you could sell it at a garage sale or a profitable website like eBay, but only choose that route if it is something that can make you a good chunk of change on or items that will sell within a few days. Don’t hold on to it for too long because remember we are trying to get rid of the clutter.
3. Make sure everything has a place.
This process does not have to cost a single penny. As long as there is a place for these things you are keeping, it is OK to keep it. A shelf or a drawers are meant to store things so it is great to utilize this space if necessary. Once it becomes too full though, it is time to rethink the space you are using.
4. Look at expiration dates.
Just about everything has an expiration date. I am so guilty of keeping medications that have been prescribed to my children last the expiration date. Other things have an expiration date too such as lotion and even makeup. Perfumes can lose their sweet scents after a while too. So make sure the items you keep are fresh and up to date.
5. Reward yourself.
Dedicate a few hours of your day to get rid of clutter, post items for sale on eBay, and take out the trash. Plan a day when you are able to dedicate some time to this task because it does take time. Once you are done with a space, a room, or a couple of spaces, reward yourself. Whether it be a cup of hot chocolate or a nice bubble bath, reward yourself because you got it done!
